skin needling
Pre & post Care Guide
Guided by science, designed for lasting skin health
The LUME Approach to Skin Needling
At LUME, skin needling is not just another skin procedure. It is a considered, science-led process designed to protect, strengthen and honour your skin at every stage.
I weave together advanced training, medical-grade technology and corneotherapeutic principles to work in complete harmony with your skin’s natural biology. From the very beginning, with an in-depth consultation and a focus on preparing “juicy plum” skin cells, through to precise treatment techniques and ongoing recovery support, every step is intentional.
By respecting your barrier, nourishing with internal nutrients and following evidence-based protocols, we create results that are not only visible but lasting.
Skin needling at LUME is a tailored journey that brings together science and care, with your healthiest, most radiant skin as the destination.
I cannot wait to take you on this journey to your best skin yet.
Warmly,
Reanna x
Skin Needling at Lume
Skin needling works by stimulating your skin’s natural repair process, encouraging the production of healthy collagen, elastin and fresh new cells. To achieve the very best results, it’s important to prepare your skin properly beforehand and to follow thoughtful aftercare. This guide is here to show you how to nurture your skin before and after your treatment, so together we can create results that last.
Pre-Skin Needling Preparation
Preparing your skin in the weeks before treatment is an important part of achieving the best possible results. Skin that is healthy, hydrated and resilient responds more effectively and recovers more quickly.
The following treatments are recommended to help you achieve the ultimate results, but they are not essential. If you are unable to fit them in, your skin needling will still be effective. These simply provide an extra layer of support and conditioning.
1. LUME Express Glow (Enzyme + LED) – 1 week prior | $144
This gentle ritual combines an enzyme-based exfoliation, which dissolves surface congestion and smooths the skin, with targeted LED light therapy. LED calms inflammation, energises skin cells (ATP) and strengthens the skin’s natural healing response. Together, they create a receptive, balanced canvas for your needling session.
2. LED Light Therapy – 2 to 4 weekly sessions prior | $75
A short series of LED treatments in the lead-up to needling helps condition and strengthen your skin. Regular LED supports:
Stimulation of fibroblasts for collagen and elastin production
Improved circulation and oxygenation, enhancing nutrient delivery
Calming of redness and subclinical inflammation for a balanced base
By adding in these optional treatments, you are giving your skin the energy, strength and balance it needs for a smoother treatment, faster recovery and results that are more visible and long-lasting.
Preparing Your Skin for Optimal Results
Skin needling relies on your skin’s ability to regenerate. How your skin performs during this process depends on how well it has been nourished and supported in the weeks leading up to treatment.
4 Weeks Before Your Appointment
• Apply SPF every morning
UV exposure interferes with healing and increases the risk of pigmentation after treatment. Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen daily, rain or shine, and avoid prolonged sun exposure.
• Topical Vitamin A
Supports skin cell renewal, barrier repair and collagen production. If suitable for your skin, we’ll guide you on the right type and strength. Please patch test and introduce slowly if you’re new to this ingredient.
• Begin or continue omega-3 supplementation
Essential fatty acids help reduce inflammation, support internal hydration and strengthen your skin barrier. Aim for daily intake for at least 4 weeks before your treatment. We are happy to recommend a suitable product if needed.
• Stay well hydrated
Aim for at least 2-3 litres of water per day starting 2-4 weeks before your treatment and continuing for at least 2 weeks after. Hydrated skin cells are stronger and more resilient.
• Support collagen production with key nutrients
Ensure you are not deficient in:
– Vitamin C
– Iron
– Zinc
– Essential fatty acids
We can guide you on dietary or supplemental options if needed.
• Keep your skincare simple and barrier-focused
Avoid harsh exfoliants, scrubs, strong actives or retinoids unless prescribed by me. Focus on nourishing, calming and supportive products.
7 Days Before Your Appointment
• Avoid waxing, shaving, epiblading, threading or laser on the treatment area
• No injectable treatments (Botox or fillers) within 2 weeks of your session
• Avoid direct sun and do not allow your skin to burn
• Discontinue fake tan and gradual tanning products
• At home LED therapy is fine before your appointment but not on the same day
72 Hours Before Your Appointment
• Discontinue all actives including:
– Vitamin A - all Prologic moisturisers can continue being used
– AHAs (glycolic, lactic)
– BHAs (salicylic)
– Enzymes and exfoliants
• Avoid facial treatments, scrubs or peels
• Keep skin calm, moisturised and hydrated
• Ensure no active breakouts, wounds or lesions are present in the area
On the Day
• If possible arrive with freshly cleansed skin - no makeup, no sunscreen
• Bring a wide-brimmed hat or scarf to protect your skin when leaving if your appointment is during the day
• Avoid coffee or alcohol beforehand as they may increase redness
Contraindications - When to Delay Treatment
• Active infections, rashes, open wounds or sunburn
• Cold sores - please take antiviral medication if you are prone to them
• Autoimmune conditions - consult your GP before beginning treatment
What to Expect After Micro-needling
Micro-needling initiates a deep healing process. Redness, heat and sensitivity are expected in the first 48 hours as your skin begins its natural regeneration response.
What’s Normal
• Redness, warmth and tightness for 24 to 48 hours
• Light dryness or flaking between days 3 to 5
• Skin may feel sensitive or dry for up to 7 to 10 days
• Gradual improvement in tone, texture and firmness over 4 to 6 weeks
Post-Treatment Care
First 24 to 48 Hours
• Do not cool the skin - no ice, cold water, cooling masks or tools
The inflammatory response is essential for proper collagen formation.
• Do not cleanse, wear makeup or apply SPF for the first 12 hours
• Always wash your hands thoroughly before touching your face or applying any post-treatment product.
• Apply only your prescribed aftercare - Cream Cleanser, Hydrating serum & Prologic Omega-3 oil are recommended aftercare
• Use your take-home bio-cellulose mask as directed
• Use a clean pillow case and towel
• Avoid:
– Exercise
– Hot showers
– Direct sun exposure
• Avoid any skincare products containing fragrance or essential oils. These can irritate your healing skin and increase sensitivity and promote pigmentation.
• Avoid makeup (avoid for 48 hours or until skin feels completely calm and ideally stick with mineral tinted SPF or make up)
Day 2 and Onward
• Gently cleanse with a non-stripping, fragrance-free cleanser (Pre Cleanse oil and Cream Cleanser are ideal)
• If you are using Prologic skin care you can continue as normal, however please skip any of the following until day 3 (Gel Cleanser, Skin Intelligence Cleanser, Vitamin C Power Serum, Skin Recovery treatment oil)
• Continue with your recommended Omega-3 oil
• Start skin soaking again with Micro-fibre cloth
• Avoid all exfoliants including chemical AHAs, BHAs
• Avoid any skincare products containing fragrance or essential oils. These can irritate your healing skin and increase sensitivity and promote pigmentation.
Day 3 and Onward
From this point, you can begin to reintroduce all of your usual skincare products and return to your normal routine, as long as your skin feels calm and comfortable.
Complimentary Recovery Express Glow + LED
From day 3 after your needling session, your skin will be ready to receive a little extra care. This treatment is designed to support healing and enhance your results, and is best booked anytime between day 3 and two weeks post-treatment. In this 45-minute ritual, your skin will be gently nurtured with a customised double cleanse, a soft enzyme exfoliation under steam, replenishing hydration, and targeted LED light therapy. Together, these steps calm, restore, and bring back that fresh post-treatment glow.
Avoid for 7 Days
• Sun exposure
• Tanning products
• Waxing, shaving, threading or epiblading
• Exfoliants of any kind
• Facial tools like gua sha or rollers
• Ocean water and chlorinated pools
• Avoid intense heat exposure for at least 7 to 14 days. This includes saunas, hot yoga, steamy environments and anything that causes prolonged flushing or sweating.
Supporting Your Skin from Within
• Hydration - Aim for 2 litres of filtered water daily before and after your treatment
• Essential fatty acids - Continue your daily omega-3 intake to support healing and barrier repair
• Nutrition - Maintain a nutrient-rich diet that supports skin function and collagen synthesis
Healing Reminders
• Let your skin lead - avoid overdoing your routine or adding new products. Less is always more!
• Do not apply cold compresses or cool your skin
• Avoid sun completely until you are cleared to reintroduce SPF
• Wear a wide-brimmed hat when outdoors
• Reach out if you have any concerns or questions during healing
A Final Note
Skin needling works by stimulating your skin’s natural repair process, and this takes time. Collagen production begins within days, but it takes several weeks for new fibres to form and strengthen.
In the first week, you may notice a brighter, fresher appearance as cell turnover increases. Most people begin to see visible improvements in texture, tone and firmness around four to six weeks after treatment, with results continuing to build over the next 24 months.
For best outcomes, a course of treatments is recommended, as each session builds on the last. Consistent home care and daily sun protection is a must and will help to maintain and enhance your results.
If you experience any unexpected reactions or discomfort, stop using your products and contact me directly for guidance. For any questions or personalised support during your healing, please reach out - I am here to support you.
Warmest,
Reanna x
